AITA for bringing up privacy laws and data ethics to a friend's brother who works at Snapchat in a small talk convo?
2020.09.23 02:45 Low_Representative_2AITA for bringing up privacy laws and data ethics to a friend's brother who works at Snapchat in a small talk convo?
Today I met a longtime friend at his house and his brother was there who I haven't talked to in years. My friend left and it was just me and the brother. I knew he worked in tech and I brought up work to make conversation. He said he works at Snapchat now. He told me what he does exactly, but I didn't fully understand. Since I couldn't really talk shop for the tech industry I kinda went down the road of privacy laws of big tech companies that collect user info by bringing up the new Netflix documentary, "the Social Delimma." It seemed harmless and topical at first, but immediately I felt like I crossed a line. He said Snapchat collects data on its users and sort of explained how and for what purpose. I didn't really know how to respond and really I guess I was fishing for his personal stance on the issue, but it felt like I was forcing him into a political argument. I tried making a joke about what we maybe were both thinking, but didn't want to say and said something like, "so you're working for the overlords." It wasn't really responded to and he seemed to keep his personal feelings a secret which I guess makes sense for professional reasons. At this point my friend returned and I spoke to him to change the subject, and then the brother got up and left. The brother is a quiet tech type person who is hard to read, but he was giving me a vibe that I looked like a q-anon wackjob or something for not liking that big data collects and sells our data. I get that it's not the time or place for that debate, but I thought there's ways to casually talk about it without any problems even if you work there. Regardless I'm wondering now if he doesn't have a problem with privacy laws and data ethics and refused to say anything about it. He made me feel like the debate is probably heavily propagandized in the media but that's the insight I was hoping he might mention. I kinda don't feel bad if I made him uncomfortable as well because I think he didn't even acknowledge the problem in any capacity. For my understanding of the issue I think it's a little "silence is violence" at this point. Extreme rhetoric, but basically I mean it's surprising to bring up the topic and not have any feelings on it or care to share them given the impact of this problem.
Hey guys, this is a repost. I figured I'd try this again. I'm Alex! Sorry, I'm kinda bad at this but I guess I'll just start by describing myself..... I'm 18 years old (just started college btw). I'm from the southern US, and I'm of English, Scottish, German, and Norwegian ancestry. I'm 6 feet tall (183cm) and rather skinny. I have dark brown hair and hazel eyes, I've been told I have very striking eyes, idk if that's true or not XD As for my personality, I'm pretty quiet and reserved, even shy sometimes, but once I get to know people I open up a lot. I'm usually a loner, and I only have a few friends, which works for me. I was always that kid in the back of class that didn't talk much. Outwardly I'm very humble and modest, but in reality I'm actually quite arrogant, and I'm pretty selfish as well. Also, you should know that I can be kinda clingy, that's kinda rare for me though unless I find myself attracted to you for whatever reason. Which brings me to another part of my personality, I can be very personal, I like talking about things that are very personal to me, stuff that's on my mind, etc. So if you like talking about stuff like that, I have no issue with that. If you need to vent to me, or rant or whatever, or you're having a tough time, I'm here for you. I can talk about pretty much anything as long as we can both keep the conversation alive. I try my best, but sometimes I'm just not that interested or enthusiastic about certain topics, but generally speaking I think I can hold a decent conversation, I would like for you to do the same. We can talk about whatever really. I like silly convos and sending memes and just dicking around, but I also like deep, INtTElLeCtuAl conversations and shit like that :D Sometimes I try too hard to be really profound, so I might just end up saying something really dumb XD Here's some more stuff about me............. PHILOSOPHY: Ok, this is one of the most important things to me personally. I plan on pursuing a career in philosophy since it's kind of my greatest passion. I'm more interested in Western philosophy as opposed to Eastern for those of you who are interested, nothing wrong with Eastern philosophy, just my preference. My favorite philosophers include: Friedrich Nietzsche, Max Stirner, Arthur Schopenhauer, Hegel, John Locke, etc. BOOKS: I don't get to read as much as I would like because of all the stuff I have going on right now, but I am a huge fan of Tolkien. I love LOTR and The Hobbit. Fiction isn't usually what I read, I love books on scientific or philosophical topics. Also anything historical is fun for me. Please give me your suggestions if you have any. MUSIC: This is also something that's really important to me. Classical music is mostly what I listen to, My favorite composers are Wagner, Strauss, Bach, Tchaikovsky, and so on. but there's lots of other music that I like. I also listen to quite a bit of indie and alt rock. I like Beach House, Metric, Alvvays, Big Data, etc. Sometimes I listen to orthodox christian music (chants and stuff like that), even though I'm not christian myself. I'd love to listen to any music you suggest to me. Imo there should only be two types of music, good music and bad music. I define good music as music that can make me "feel" something, if that makes sense. Or better yet, music that moves me, which I define as great music. Whereas bad music doesn't make me feel anything. ART: I can't imagine a world without art. It's something that I feel very deeply about. My main interest is paintings, namely the Post-Impressionist movement. I love Van Gogh and he is one of the most important people in my life even though I have no connection with him. It's hard to describe, his art moves me in ways that other art can't. I also like renaissance period art and even medieval art. GAMES: Not something I spend as much time doing as I used to. I don't play any online games so sorry if you're looking for someone to play with. Gaming is more of a thing I do to escape the outside world and get away from people for a time. Just my preference. I like games like Red Dead Redemption 2, The Witcher 3, Shadow of Mordor, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, etc. SHOWS: The last show I watched was Downton Abbey and I loved it. I haven't really been watching much though since Game of Thrones ended horribly. I used to be a huge fan of The Walking Dead, but it just got repetitve. Anything involving horror or psychological horror is something I'd be interested in. I also like anything based on real historical events. RELIGION: I am not religious myself. I don't care if you are or not, as long as you don't try to push your ideology on me. POLITICS: This isn't something I'm super knowledgeable about, but I do find it interesting. I've taken a ton of political compass tests which you can check out on my profile. I'm pretty much LibRight and I consider myself a classical liberal. I believe in personal freedoms very strongly. I'm definitely down to talk about politics with you if that's your thing. SEX/SEXUALITY: You could probably consider me bisexual, I don't really have a preference towards guys or girls, if that's something you're not cool with, it's probably best if we don't talk. As for sex, we can definitely talk about it if you want. It's not something I'm uncomfortable talking about. It's up to you really. I think that's pretty much it. This might be my longest post ever XD Thanks for taking the time read my post :) Edit: I forgot to mention, I love animals, especially cats :3

Disclaimer: This is my editing for the last 1-2 weeks, so there could be some misunderstandings and exaggerations, especially because many of these convos are from 'spec channel', so please don't take it 100% fact-wise. I share this summary to help survive this patient game and spread good spirits of IOTA. Charlie [IF]어제 오전 8:26 I think chrysalis will bring a nice pamp people will see how well the protocol works through a nice new wallet we'll have a suite of libraries for people to build with new exchanges maybe not to the same extent as coordicide but it'll increase our market rank significantly, imo 📷 Mark Schmidt [IF]어제 오전 8:49 As soon as the majority of tokens are bought for actual use, we can speak of proper valuations. You want to have them finalized before revealing them? 📷 Hans Moog [IF]오늘 오후 6:34 Writing specs that are concise enough to leave no open questions takes time and people are pretty busy + things are also still being optimized. While you implement and design data structures, you suddenly realize that some things can be solved in a much more efficient way than initially envisioned. We are for example thinking about increasing the number of other messages a message can reference as the tip selection has become orders of magnitude more efficient. This solves the last "problematic" attack vector of blowballs where an attacker tries to inflate the number of available tips. This change also massively decreases things like confirmation times. We are also getting rid of the nested value tangle and replace it with the "approval reset switch" that we discussed a few days ago so we only have 1 tangle in a single layer that contains everything. This will not only lead to a better perception of things like confirmation confidence as even data messages are contributing to the approval of value transfers but it also makes a lot of algorithms much simplerthat would otherwise have to take the separation of the layers into account. If we would have tried to spec the state before these optimizations then this would have essentially been a lot of wasted time. The same goes for mana - while we implement the first version of it we expect a few interesting insights not only into how it behaves but how it can be optimized regarding its implementation.Once we feel confident that aspects are more or less final we will write concise specs butfor now, the focus is on optimizations and learning from the real-world implementation.****(수정됨) 📷 toothless오늘 오후 6:38 Hans I reverse engineered your autopeering protocol. Genius system 📷 Hans Moog [IF]오늘 오후 6:48 There are internal specs for pretty much everything and of course, you need them to implement stuff but internal specs and public specs are two different things as internal specs sometimes also name a few different "options" how to do things whereas public specs are usually very concise and leave very little room for discussions.****(수정됨) 📷 Hans Moog [IF]오늘 오후 6:50 It's just different scopes - just look at the little mana document that we have in goshimmer. Everybody who internally works on goshimmer knows that "access mana" controls the influence on rate control and your throughput in the network while "consensus mana" controls the influence in voting 📷 Hans Moog [IF]오늘 오후 6:53 It's two different aspects that are not necessarily related and the fact that we have 2 mana vectors totally confused cpt.WTF to a degree where he felt like he needs to write another article where he again tells everybody that he doesn't understand shit Ideally, public specs wouldn't leave these kinds of questions open so people don't get confused 📷 dom오늘 오전 3:56 yeh the highest priority right now is really Chrysalis and delivering that on the mainnet. for the testnet October is what we're aiming for with that, we can then already speak with exchanges about integrations etc. 📷 ThomasQv오늘 오전 3:59 Is there something else going on behind the scenes that we will bee seeing this year?Kind of feel it will be all hands on deck this year for chrysalis so not much other news will be expected 📷 dom오늘 오전 4:00 more product announcements by us / partners will also come ayewe'll get there. So while the market is high on defi atm and every other coin is announcing their own form of DeFi, we can't lose focus like that and diverge from the roadmap we defined 📷 dom오늘 오전 4:07 one thing that has been proven is thatyou can really not acquire a sustainable ecosystem and adoption in this space. Today I gave the OMG an update on the current state of the IOTA Protocol. The (Research) raw specs are still in draft, I hope to have a more substantive draft for December but we can only submit formally once the IOTA2.0 specs are implemented on Mainnet, for March. How IOTA is positioned in those bullruns is of course a whole 'nother topic Personally, I keep 95%+ of my wealth in IOTA. That's the strongest sentiment I can express
2020.09.21 04:26 RaecrcI left. So many posts from me sorry
I left while he was putting the 2 year old to bed. He started giving me the silent treatment after HE brought up my issues with porn bc i have high blood pressure and need to lower my stress he said I need to get over porn and brought up the whole convo (see my previous posts). So now I’m at an McD parking lot. We got into a physical fight bc I went for his phone to smash it tbh bc im tired of it in our life. I left him with the kids (no he’s not a danger to them). I left a note to tell me when he decided what’s most important to him to tell me. Of course he will call me a bad mom and say he’s done enough for me. But he won’t hear me out he thinks once a month is fair and I should just shut up. Well my 2 year old is such a mamas boy it will be hard for my hubby to get him to bed but idk how to get him to take me seriously. He still hasn’t even checked on me. I blocked explicit content on Disney circle when I left and we get bad signal so very little data options.
2020.09.20 18:48 Independent_Winter3Don’t know what to do! Long distance, location sharing disaster. Help me please.
So my boyfriend(39m)and I(27f) are currently in a long distance relationship. He moved for a job a few months ago. The only concern I’ve had with our relationship up until this point is that he occasionally will get angry about where I’m going or who I’m hanging out with. We have both been on google location sharing almost the entire time we have been together. We added it pretty casually and never really talked about it. The other night, I forgot to tell him that my friend moved to the other side of town so when I told him I was going to my friends house and wasn’t at the old location he called me. He was acting really weird and checking that their old house sold and that the new address was newly rented. He claimed the story wasn’t adding up although I sent him a photo of my friend and he could still see my location. He angrily turned off location sharing that night so I did the same thing. At about 1 am, I get a phone call from him and he is drunk. He was raising his voice at me and using profanity telling me that it’s “so stupid to not have told him she moved” and he’s “never been more angry at me”. I had simply explained that I had forgotten since it didn’t effect his or my life. He was unable to be reasoned with and was unable to see that I didn’t do anything wrong. He said that “omitting that info” was unacceptable. I eventually hung up bc they convo wasn’t going anywhere productive. I thought the conversation seemed controlling and boarder line abusive. The next day I didn’t hear anything from him until I caved and called around 4pm. He had no apology for how he treated me until I basically begged him to apologize for speaking to me in an inappropriate manner. He also stood by the fact that I had done something wrong and lied about where I was going.... although I told him exactly whose house I was going to and he could track my location.... he then went on to say that there have been times where my location said I was somewhere other than where I was supposed to be and wasn’t answering my phone. I can say that I 100% haven’t cheated, hung out with anyone he hasn’t wanted me to hangout with, and if I didn’t answer my phone it was probably off or due to crappy phone signal on his end. I don’t even know how to defend that accusation with no objective data. So I’m frustrated.... This seems to be a Red flag and I’m scared he will treat me with disrespect, mistrust, and unwillingness to see things from my perspective. He says he trusts me but the experience of this interaction tells me otherwise. I know he and I are both under a lot of stress at the moment but I don’t think that warrants this kind of fight over something so little. He said that if anything I owe him an apology. He hasn’t reassured me verbally of his feelings for me so I’m just feeling shitty. I genuinely don’t think I did anything wrong and can’t tell if this is appropriate behavior. Maybe I’m crazy...Opinions? Upvote this so he can see that I’m not psycho lol.
Hi everyone, I have a gvoice line in which has been in service for well over ten years now. With a few thousand saved text message convos along with 2200 saved voicemails that are safe and sound within the Google voice domain. Has anyone experienced any type of data loss when porting their GV to GF? That alone is my primary concern. I DO NOT want to lose any of my text and voicemails that I can currently access from 10 years ago. I want to give the Fi service a try with my pixel 2 XL and if it all works out, I'll be moving all my lines from sprint to. GFi.
2020.09.19 14:03 ScaryMonstersRequiemMy thoughts on Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn.
My opinions on the game are... conflicting but ultimately not negative. I mentioned in my PoR post that I think one of that game's biggest strengths was it's conveyance. With great ambient sound design and proper pacing of scenes to convey the weight of every decision. I don't think that really sticks here, a lot of scenes are once again too brief, in regular FE fashion. I ultimately don't hate this game's story, I think it's fine, but I don't care for a lot of it. The most engaging part of the game for me was between the end of Part 2 and beginning of Part 3. Elincia's struggles and the GM base convos were great. I think Micaiah's a fine character, nothing too special though. But to be fair, even Ike (who I love) feels pretty stale here aside from a few stand-out moments. It's also extremely odd how the game tried to frame it as his story by the end even though he doesn't have much to do with it for a lot of the game's duration. Gameplay wise... well, I have a pretty unique experience with this game because I lost my save data on 3-10 and had to restart the game, on Normal both times. I think this definitely contributed to my fatigue of this game. But even beyond that, I know why it's the case but a lot of characters have a ridiculous availability issue and other cases of balance just feel weird. Ultimately though, it's better than PoR in this regard, it is at the very least much faster so it moves at a better pace. It was also quite fun using all the Laguz royals. The DB was insufferable though, the only saving graces for me in Part 3 were Jill and the Nolan/Zihark duo with +45 avoid at A support. My thoughts on the Tower really did swing back and forth too, I liked it initially, then it got too long and I didn't want to deal with the Ashera chapter, but then I took some time to think about how to approach it and it ended up being one of more liked Final maps in the series, it was pretty fun. That really describes my experiences with this game overall, pendular, I guess. I think it could've been a lot better as a sequel to PoR but not bad overall. Haar was the obvious MVP, but he didn't get enough speed so he actually fell off in the Endgame. R.I.P Giffca, he died from Aura recoil but he was MVP of final map along with Tibarn for handling the Auras, he was MVP for Ashnard in PoR too. Other shoutouts go to Boyd who I trained back from the bench in Part 4 only for him to become fucking amazing, OscaTitania as a duo for proccing Sol every other battle, Elincia for the Physic and dodging Ashera's silence like a champ and finally Shinon for being one hell of a great Archer, with more defense than Titania! ...Still racist though. (Sacred Stones is up next, I've played the game but never finished it.)
2020.09.18 17:52 kpcwazabiHow to ask previous recruiter for new opportunities available?
So I interviewed for an internship at FAANG earlier in the year but didn't get the role as I was heavily unprepared and didn't taken a data structures course at the time. The only reason I was able to interview was because of a connection I made that lead to me coming into contact with a recruiter. The recruiter and I didn't really keep in contact throughout the summer until a few weeks ago when I sent an email catching up and asking about his work experience during the pandemic. I just got a reply back with him sharing some links of what the company is doing during these times but that's pretty much it. How can I direct this convo into me asking for any potential opportunities that I can interview for?
2020.09.16 21:22 Iam_Aashish7[RANT] Can’t open the game for hours until VVD loading screen Comes, game consumes lot of data.
Can’t open the game for hours until VVD loading screen comes I have to skip hazard loading screen every time cos game doesn’t open at all I missed many event energy and other rewards just because of this bug and if opens then consumes a lot of data this shit consumed my 90% data in just 6 minutes are you kidding me ? that’s more than 1GB. I contacted EA help 2 times they suggested me to use wifi ?? why can’t u just fix this ? I again asked about loading screen bug those idiots replied me after hours I slept cos they didn’t replied back and expect me to reply them instantly just because I didn’t replied them they ended the convo. F**k this game if this happens in new season I’m not playing this trash.
2020.09.16 14:10 MajinDLXHow come Jami isn't the go to messaging app for privacy focused users?
I keep trying to convert my friends to Signal and while browsing privactools Jami caught my eyes and after reading a lot about it I dont really understand how it's not the app that everybody uses. There are just a few topics about it on the sub, and more surprisingly there are only around 5-6 videos on YouTube about Jami and basically only two of them provide adequate information. Its decentralized, it's p2p, it's e2ee by default, no hidden setup features or options. Its cross platform, it has a desktop application, it can do text, voice, video, groups, file transfer, screenshare. Its FOSS. Registering an account is anonymous, it stores data on your machine and if you delete the convo from the device, its gone for good. I mean... it's everything anybody could want, isnt it? I just fail to see what is the problem. How come it's not the first recommendation in each privacy focused tech video or messaging app review? What am I missing? Thanks for the answer.
Here's a convo extract from my recent gameplay, enjoy and have fun reading these mind-numbing sentences. Convo snap - White reports body in Cafe. 2020.09.12 12:59 not3catsintrenchcoatContradictory Meta
My partner and I have been dating for months, and upfront agreed on KTP. They have frequently mentioned their ex and how they still care for them. I ran into their ex on social media platform because of a mutual's activity, where I found that the ex had written that poly had been a horrible experience for them. I mentioned my concern about this to with partner, who said that they couldn't see that writing because they had encouraged their ex to block them when their ex said it was too painful and triggering to see them with other people. My partner said they would talk about it with the ex. Fast forward to now, the ex wants to come visit for a week so they can work out what they want to do, date or just play etc. Cool and fine with me. I thought this person was maybe gonna be my meta, so I reached out to friend them on the same social media platform only to find they had blocked me. I figured maybe they disliked me and moved on. I gave my partner lots of space while the ex was here so they could enjoy and work through their situation, which they appreciated. 3 days into the visit, the ex declares they want to meet me. I decline this (Covid/they have just flown in from another country, and I am going to see a very sick/immunocompromised friend next week), but the ex wanted to video chat, where they tell me that they want to be friendly. Today my partner told that they and their ex they are gonna date again which, which again I have no qualm with. I tell my partner I now feel like he has reneged on our KTP agreement, because I feel my meta has no real interest in KTP. I explained the way I look at it is that I have 3 data points ( the writing, the block, meta convo about wanting to be friendly) and they are 2-1 contradictory. My partner doesn't feel anything has changed. They offered to facilitate a phone call between all of us to figure this out, but I don't feel it's my job to figure out. I asked my partner how a relationship could be KTP if it is going to bother my meta to see us together. My partner said that is a great question and they didn't know but I should ask my meta. I'm partially venting but advice would be welcome.

Honestly, mostly just asking to see how people are feeling in the context of covid/this admissions cycle in particular (for the sake of the poll, let’s say all these schools are in the region you want to practice) eta: this is more just for shits n giggles convo than any real data eeta: defend your answer in comments for extra credit View Poll
Hey guys, I'm Alex!
2020.09.08 08:59 btlkhs[OWL WATCH] Waiting for "IOTA TIME" 20; Hans's re-defined directions for DLT
Disclaimer: This is my editing, so there could be some misunderstandings... -------------------------------------------- wellwho오늘 오후 4:50 u/BenRoyce****how far is society2 from having something clickable powered by IOTA? Ben Royce오늘 오후 4:51 demo of basic tech late sep/ early oct. MVP early 2021 --------------------------------------------------- HusQy Colored coins are the most misunderstood upcoming feature of the IOTA protocol. A lot of people see them just as a competitor to ERC-20 tokens on ETH and therefore a way of tokenizing things on IOTA, but they are much more important because they enable "consensus on data". Bob All this stuff already works on neblio but decentralized and scaling to 3500 tps HusQy Neblio has 8 mb blocks with 30 seconds blocktime. This is a throughput of 8 mb / 30 seconds = 267 kb per second.Transactions are 401+ bytes which means that throughput is 267 kb / 401 bytes = 665 TPS. IOTA is faster, feeless and will get even faster with the next update ... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- HusQy Which DLT would be more secure? One that is collaboratively validated by the economic actors of the world (coporations, companies, foundations, states, people) or one that is validated by an anonymous group of wealthy crypto holders? HusQy The problem with current DLTs is that we use protection mechanisms like Proof of Work and Proof of Stake that are inherently hard to shard. The more shards you have, the more you have to distribute your hashing power and your stake and the less secure the system becomes. HusQy Real world identities (i.e. all the big economic actors) however could shard into as many shards as necessary without making the system less secure. Todays DLTs waste trust in the same way as PoW wastes energy. HusQy Is a secure money worth anything if you can't trust the economic actors that you would buy stuff from? If you buy a car from Volkswagen and they just beat you up and throw you out of the shop after you payed then a secure money won't be useful either :P HusQy **I believe that if you want to make DLT work and be successful then we need to ultimately incorporate things like trust in entities into the technology.**Examples likes wirecard show that trusting a single company is problematic buttrusting the economy as a whole should be at ... **... least as secure as todays DLTs.**And as soon as you add sharding it will be orders of magnitude more secure.DLT has failed to deliver because people have tried to build a system in vacuum that completely ignores things that already exist and that you can leverage on. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HusQy Blockchain is a bit like people sitting in a room, trying to communicate through BINGO sheets. While they talk, they write down some of the things that have been said and as soon as one screams BINGO! he hands around his sheet to inform everybody about what has been said. HusQy If you think that this is the most efficient form of communication for people sitting in the same room and the answer to scalability is to make bigger BINGO sheets or to allow people to solve the puzzle faster then you will most probably never understand what IOTA is working on. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HusQy **Blockchain does not work with too many equally weighted validators.****If 400 validators produce a validating statement (block) at the same time then only one can survive as part of a longest chain.**IOTA is all about collaborative validation. **Another problem of blockchain is that every transaction gets sent twice through the network. Once from the nodes to the miners and a 2nd time from the miners as part of a block.**Blockchain will therefore always only be able to use 50% of the network throughput. And****the last problem is that you can not arbitrarily decrease the time between blocks as it breaks down if the time between blocks gets smaller than the average network delay. The idle time between blocks is precious time that could be used for processing transactions. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- HusQy I am not talking about a system with a fixed number of validators but one that is completely open and permissionless where any new company can just spin up a node and take part in the network. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ HusQy Proof of Work and Proof of Stake are both centralizing sybil-protection mechanism. I don't think that Satoshi wanted 14 mining pools to run the network. And "economic clustering" was always the "end game" of IOTA. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- HusQy **Using Proof of Stake is not trustless. Proof of Stake means you trust the richest people and hope that they approve your transactions. The rich are getting richer (through your fees) and you are getting more and more dependant on them.**Is that your vision of the future? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- HusQy Please read again exactly what I wrote. I have not spoken of introducing governance by large companies, nor have I said that IOTA should be permissioned. We aim for a network with millions or even billions of nodes. HusQy That can't work at all with a permissioned ledger - who should then drop off all these devices or authorize them to participate in the network? My key message was the following: Proof of Work and Proof of Stake will always be if you split them up via sharding ... HusQy ... less secure because you simply need fewer coins or less hash power to have the majority of the votes in a shard. This is not the case with trust in society and the economy. When all companies in the world jointly secure a DLT ... HusQy ... then these companies could install any number of servers in any number of shards without compromising security, because "trust" does not become less just because they operate several servers. First of all, that is a fact and nothing else. HusQy Proof of Work and Proof of Stake are contrary to the assumption of many not "trustless" but follow the maxim: "In the greed of miners we trust!" The basic assumption that the miners do not destroy the system that generates income for them is fundamental here for the ... HusQy ... security of every DLT. I think a similar assumption would still be correct for the economy as a whole: The companies of the world (and not just the big ones) would not destroy the system with which their customers pay them. In this respect, a system would be ... HusQy ... which is validated by society and the economy as a whole probably just as "safely" as a system which is validated by a few anonymous miners. Why a small elite of miners should be better validators than any human and ... HusQy ... To be honest, companies in this world do not open up to me. As already written in my other thread, safe money does not bring you anything if you have to assume that Volkswagen will beat you up and throw you out of the store after you ... HusQy ... paid for a car. The thoughts I discussed say nothing about the immediate future of IOTA (we use for Coordicide mana) but rather speak of a world where DLT has already become an integral part of our lives and we ... HusQy ... a corresponding number of companies, non-profit organizations and people have used DLT and where such a system could be implemented. The point here is not to create a governance solution that in any way influences the development of technology ... HusQy ... or have to give nodes their OK first, but about developing a system that enables people to freely choose the validators they trust. For example, you can also declare your grandma to be a validator when you install your node or your ... HusQy ... local supermarket. Economic relationships in the real world usually form a close-knit network and it doesn't really matter who you follow as long as the majority is honest. I also don't understand your criticism of censorship, because something like that in IOTA ... HusQy ... is almost impossible. Each transaction confirms two other transactions which is growing exponentially. If someone wanted to ignore a transaction, he would have to ignore an exponential number of other transactions after a very short time. In contrast to blockchain ... HusQy ... validators in IOTA do not decide what is included in the ledger, but only decide which of several double spends should be confirmed. Honest transactions are confirmed simply by having other transactions reference them ... HusQy ... and the "validators" are not even asked. As for the "dust problem", this is indeed something that is a bigger problem for IOTA than for other DLTs because we have no fees, but it is also not an unsolvable problem. Bitcoin initially has a ... HusQy Solved similar problem by declaring outputs with a minimum amount of 5430 satoshis as invalid (github.com/Bitcoin/Bitcoi…). A similar solution where an address must contain a minimum amount is also conceivable for IOTA and we are discussing ... HusQy ... several possibilities (including compressing dust using cryptographic methods). Contrary to your assumption, checking such a minimum amount is not slow but just as fast as checking a normal transaction. And mine ... HusQy ... In my opinion this is no problem at all for IOTA's use case. The important thing is that you can send small amounts, but after IOTA is feeless it is also okay to expect the recipients to regularly send their payments on a ... HusQy ... merge address. The wallets already do this automatically (sweeping) and for machines it is no problem to automate this process. So far this was not a problem because the TPS were limited but with the increased TPS throughput of ... HusQy ... Chrysalis it becomes relevant and appropriate solutions are discussed and then implemented accordingly. I think that was the most important thing first and if you have further questions just write :) HusQy And to be very clear! I really appreciate you and your questions and don't see this as an attack at all! People who see such questions as inappropriate criticism should really ask whether they are still objective. I have little time at the moment because ... HusQy ... my girlfriend is on tour and has to take care of our daughter, but as soon as she is back we can discuss these things in a video. I think that the concept of including the "real world" in the concepts of DLT is really exciting and ... HusQy ... that would certainly be exciting to discuss in a joint video. But again, that's more of a vision than a specific plan for the immediate future. This would not work with blockchain anyway but IOTA would be compatible so why not think about such things. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- HusQy All good my big one :P But actually not that much has changed. There has always been the concept of "economic clustering" which is basically based on similar ideas. We are just now able to implement things like this for the first time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HusQy Exactly. It would mean that addresses "cost" something but I would rather pay a few cents than fees for each transaction. And you can "take" this minimum amount with you every time you change to a new address. HusQy All good my big one :P But actually not that much has changed. There has always been the concept of "economic clustering" which is basically based on similar ideas. We are just now able to implement things like this for the first time. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Relax오늘 오전 1:17 Btw. Hans (sorry for interrupting this convo) but what make people say that IOTA is going the permissioned way because of your latest tweets? I don't get why some people are now forecasting that... Is it because of missing specs or do they just don't get the whole idea? Hans Moog [IF]오늘 오전 1:20 its bullshitu/Relaxanidentity based system would still be open and permissionless where everybody can choose the actors that they deem trustworthy themselves but thats anyway just sth that would be applicable with more adoption [오전 1:20] for now we use mana as a predecessor to an actual reputation system Sissors오늘 오전 1:31 If everybody has to choose actors they deem trustworthy, is it still permissionless? Probably will become a bit a semantic discussion, but still Hans Moog [IF]오늘 오전 1:34 Of course its permissionless you can follow your grandma if you want to :p Sissors오늘 오전 1:36 Well sure you can, but you will need to follow something which has a majority of the voting power in the network. Nice that you follow your grandma, but if others dont, her opinion (or well her nodes opinion) is completely irrelevant Hans Moog [IF]오늘 오전 1:37 You would ideally follow the people that are trustworthy rather than your local drug dealers yeah Sissors오늘 오전 1:38 And tbh, sure if you do it like that is easy. If you just make the users responsible for only connection to trustworthy nodes Hans Moog [IF]오늘 오전 1:38 And if your grandma follows her supermarket and some other people she deems trustworthy then thats fine as well [오전 1:38] + you dont have just 1 actor that you follow Sissors오늘 오전 1:38 No, you got a large list, since yo uwant to follow those which actually matter. So you jsut download a standard list from the internet Hans Moog [IF]오늘 오전 1:39 You can do that [오전 1:39] Is bitcoin permissionless? Should we both try to become miners? [오전 1:41] I mean miners that actually matter and not find a block every 10 trillion years 📷 [오전 1:42] If you would want to become a validator then you would need to build up trust among other people - but anybody can still run a node and issue transactions unlike in hashgraph where you are not able to run your own nodes(수정됨) [오전 1:48] Proof of Stake is also not trustless - it just has a builtin mechanism that downloads the trusted people from the blockchain itself (the richest dudes) Sissors오늘 오전 1:52 I think most agree it would be perfect if every person had one vote. Which is pr oblematic to implement of course. But I really wonder if the solution is to just let users decide who to trust. At the very least I expect a quite centralized network Hans Moog [IF]오늘 오전 1:53 of course even a trust based system would to a certain degree be centralized as not every person is equally trustworthy as for example a big cooperation [오전 1:53] but I think its gonna be less centralized than PoS or PoW [오전 1:53] but anyway its sth for "after coordicide" [오전 1:54] there are not enough trusted entities that are using DLT, yet to make such a system work reasonably well [오전 1:54] I think the reason why blockchain has not really started to look into these kind of concepts is because blockchain doesnt work with too many equally weighted validators [오전 1:56] I believe that DLT is only going to take over the world if it is actually "better" than existing systems and with better I mean cheaper, more secure and faster and PoS and PoW will have a very hard time to deliver that [오전 1:56] especially if you consider that its not only going to settle value transfers Relax오늘 오전 1:57 I like this clear statements, it makes it really clear that DLT is still in its infancy Hans Moog [IF]오늘 오전 1:57 currently bank transfers are order of magnitude cheaper than BTC or ETH transactions Hans Moog [IF]오늘 오전 1:57 and we you think that people will adopt it just because its crypto then I think we are mistaken [오전 1:57] The tech needs to actually solve a problem [오전 1:57] and tbh. currently people use PayPal and other companies to settle their payments [오전 1:58] having a group of the top 500 companies run such a service together is already much better(수정됨) [오전 1:58] especially if its fast and feeless [오전 2:02] and the more people use it, the more decentralized it actually becomes [오전 2:02] because you have more trustworthy entities to choose of Evaldas [IF]오늘 오전 2:08 "in the greed of miners we trust"
2020.09.05 07:47 redditchensAdvice on the right debate approach here - BLM
Hi guys, I’m starting out in debates, challenging viewpoints that portray as evidence based. On Instagram someone wrote a rant about BLM being a front for sinister profiteering and denying racism as an issue. I am of the view that if data is insufficient to support a point of view, then the majority’s lived experience is legitimate and requires hearing. These convos can easily spiral so I tried the approach to understand their viewpoint by questioning their evidence. Transcript of last part of convo below, felt like a gish gallop and didn’t really know where to take it from there. Grateful for any takes on the right line of questioning (which doesn’t make them defensive and shut down). ME: I think what you're saying is that black people have the worst disadvantages in Dem cities. And because they are aggrieved they started BLM to showcase these injustices. But also that dems control the BLM movement in order to take funds? It feels like two opposite claims. I don't see why Actblue having an affiliation means dems get the donations. Is it not possible for many orgs to have political affiliation but provide a service not related to that affiliation? To prove this we can check if Colour for Change etc received any money, right? Thanks, the discussion is helpful to try to understand your perspective THEM: I think we have to ask though, why after 60 years of democrats leading most of these cities, are blacks still the most disadvantaged? If Dems were making any positive impact, wouldn't this gap be narrowed at all? That's an entire generation and black people are still the ones struggling. Under Obama's first two years, black unemployment doubled. Under Trump, it's at historic lows in 3.5 years. It just seems that democratic policy must actually work to keep poc oppressed. And when you're reliant on the government to fund you/feed you, you keep voting for them. It's how they have a monopoly on the black vote. Then I look at BLM which every dem leader has encouraged. It's a movement that funds Biden. Party affiliations are common as you mentioned. However this movement has made billions. Why is a movement called Black Lives Matter not open about where and how this money is being used? Why can it only be traced back to a white guys campaign? Imagine what could be done with a BILLION dollars for black communities/stores/schools, etc. and agreed.... appreciate the convo!
2020.09.04 18:54 AngryJarlEntitled man laying in gets rudely awoken by people working ON A WEEKDAY
Working in the UK. I work for a telecoms engineering company installing new lines and whatnot. The law is no loud work is allowed to start on a workday (mon-fri) before 8am. Thats a bit early for some people but hey ho, i do the loud stuff last. Get to my first job 8am, do some routing and run some preliminary cables around the outside of the house, now before i even get out my drills and hammer and I can this curtain twitcher on the ground floor and every time I look the curtain moves back. Oh great. I've been here before. It comes to doing the drilling and i drill a perfect hole into the building, no blowback, no crumbling brick... absolute knocker of a hole if I say so myself. Start tacking the cables outside against the building and BAM. Front door opens. Its now 8 45am Curtain Twitcher(CT): WHAT DO YOU THINK YOUR DOING!? ME: im just putting some cables up. CT: DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT TIME IT IS!? Me: about 9ish? Ct: I WAS SLEEPING! What on earth do you think you are doing at this time in the morning? Me: sorry mate, but its a weekday, work starts at 8 and I've got a job to do. I tried ignoring him at this point because this does happen alit and I'm not exactly customer service so I dont have to put up with it. If they want to complain they can go to the council or my company. CT: you need my permission to do that! Me: nope Ct: what do you mean no!? Its on my property. Me pointing at the dozens of other wires: I don't need permission to put another infrastructure connection over anywhere that already has infrastructure cables on it. Ct: Im going to speak to your manager, give me his number! Me: nope, can't Ct: Excuse me!?! Me: Data protection act. Ct: why does- Me: its an internal number, you can call company if you like but I can't give you any numbers of any personnel. Ct: RIGHT! SLAMS DOOR I continued my work and finished, went up to my customer and said sorry I think I pissed off your neighbour, she said oh don't worry he's an arse, he's been knocking on her door every week about her bins being out for too long after they have been collected. Classic Darren. (Paraphrased alot of the 30min convo I had with the guy for efficiency sake (and to make me look a bit more competent at arguing i actually love the fact I can be short with people, I worked retail and "customer is always right l" is sould destroying)) Never heard anything back from it either
2020.09.03 22:31 guitarsandpsycThe most eventful night I’ve ever had on shift
So I’ve posted here a few times before but I’m yet to post about any of the most eventful nights I’ve had. Just bits and pieces here and there that has occurred recently. Same as usual, I’m on my phone so formatting may not be correct. I’m finally getting round to writing this night down here as I have a few hours before I have to go back in. Apologies for any spelling/grammatical errors in advance as I was trying to type this out as quickly as possible. Let me know if you need anything clarified :) So for context, I was working nights sporadically before lockdown and then due to unforeseen circumstances I’m now doing them full time for now. Our night shift is typically 11pm-7am. The hotel is residents only from 11pm-6am and the door is locked with a key we carry on our person. Sunday-Thursday there’s only ever one staff member on and occasionally security if there’s a big event on or whatever but this is rare. Anyway, so I come in for my shift. It’s 10:30pm and I get ready, make my way down to reception, count the tills, handover with pm shift etc etc. Usual stuff I’m sure we all do when starting. This is a Sunday night so I’m the only person here once PM leaves at 11 and until AM gets in for like 6:45. Everything is signed off, I’ve got all relevant info and PM staff leave. The first hour is relatively quiet and I spend this time setting up tables for breakfast. I start setting up the buffet table too (no food at this point, just racks, plates, cutlery etc etc). The 1st incident starts here (about 12:30am) I hear the buzzer go for the front door, I head over with my residents list and key. Two girls there who are from the local area. I check their room number and names and let them in. It’s incredibly clear they’re both intoxicated already. One of them sits down on our sofa’s in the lobby and watches TV and the other heads upstairs. I don’t think anything of it and go back to the other side of the room finishing off breakfast prep. I then hear snoring so I know immediately who’s doing it. I head back over to the other side of the room and surely enough there is one of the girls pinging Z’s out. Me being a guy means I obviously can’t touch her. If it was a bloke, I could make an attempt shake him awake but it wasn’t so. I turn the lights up to full power in the lobby, blast music, get the hoover out etc and nothing seems to be making this girl even stir never mind wake up properly. So I check the camera and surely enough, turns out her pal is locked out of her room as the one who’s asleep downstairs has the key. So I run up, ask the other to come down and wake her friend up who’s asleep in the lobby and I’ll give you another so you both can get into your room. Sound logic I thought at this point. Turns out I couldn’t have been more wrong. For the sake of this little bit we’ll call the one who was asleep SC - Sleeping Charver and the other UC - Upstairs Charver. Me and UC make our way downstairs and the UC starts trying to wake SC. I’m now sorting out other bits and pieces so I’m in the general area but not necessarily paying strict attention to what’s going on. I suddenly start hearing shouting and screaming so I turn around and come back towards the desk/lounge area. SC is now on top UC on the floor and pulling her hair. I head round to try and pull SC off and I lift her actually into the air but she still has a hold of the UC hair. It’s at this point, I just put her back down and make the decision to phone the police. While I’m on the phone to the police (who in my country ask so many unbelievably stupid questions at times and this one was no different), I notice that both girls are now back on their feet but they’re all over each other. Our lounge furniture is being flung all over, a table is now on its side pretty much facing the wall. However, SC gets the upper hand on UC and the latter is now back on the floor. SC is on her feet literally kicking UC in the head while changing between doing this and getting on top of her and punching her in the head too. There’s now blood, hair and tears all over my lobby. During this time the police are asking me for descriptions, where they’re from, who’s attacking who etc. I’m just stood on the phone like yeah there’s one brutally kicking the shit out of the other, it’s all on CCTV, it’s still ongoing, just send a fucking car. While I’m trying to get the police here, UC manages to get free and now comes behind the desk and hides behind me. SC doesn’t even attempt anything (fortunately, she terrified me). Instead she just sits on the sofa (the only bit of furniture was even close to where it started the night) and resumes watching TV like nothing had happened. The police finally arrive and after some gentle conversation SC starts resisting arrest. It takes another car and a van to be called out of officers to arrest this woman. There’s now 4 officers on top of her and another still asking me about descriptions like the two women aren’t still in front of him covered in blood or anything. Eventually, SC gets taken away. A friend comes to collect UC and take her home (like I said earlier, these girls were local. Think they might have been a couple but not 100% and probably not anymore) once UC is done filling out police reports and whatnot. So incident 2... I’ve just went out and chain smoked like 3 cigarettes after the last one and not long been back in the lobby and I’m tidying up, putting furniture back, mopping up blood etc etc. We’ve had this group of Irish Teens in (18 & 19 year olds, 3 girls and a guy) here for few nights out. Turns out, two of girls have had a fight themselves while out and about in bars so the group have split. One guy and a girl and then two girls. I’ve now got the two girls in front of me (one of the ones who was fighting) and her friend here asking to move rooms. It’s Sunday and the hotel is at low occupancy so I sell them another double that’s 3 floors away from their friends who haven’t came back to the hotel yet. I agree not to mention anything to the others either (couldn’t anyway, data protection). Should note, this was happening while the police were still trying to take my statement from the fight that had just happened. This one continues later... Incident 3... About an hour after, the other two members of the Irish group come back. They tell me again what the others had like an hour prior and they’re saying they don’t want to go upstairs because they know the other two are already here. I agree and they sit in the previously wrecked but now clean lounge area eating pizza. I think nothing of it and resume marking jobs off of my nights checklist (obviously haven’t gotten very far on this and it’s now like 4am). I’m moving housekeeping trolleys upstairs when this guy comes down with no shoes on and he looks pretty scared. I should add here, this is my 3/4 shift in a row and him and his wife have been here for the full weekend up until this point. I do the usual “are you alright, sir?” And he says no. I offer him water and try to get to the bottom of what’s going on. Normally I’d tell guests to go upstairs if they had no shoes on but considering that’s where he’s just came from and he’s almost in tears, probably not a good idea to send him back up there. He won’t tell me what’s gone on but he does want me to ring the police (the joys again). This time they’re a lot faster. No silly questions or anything. I just tell them I need them at the hotel and they agree to send a car.. all good right? Wrong. This is when the wife comes out of the lift wearing nothing but a thong and not even attempting to cover up claiming that she’s locked out of the room and it was the husband that did it. Fortunately I’m still on the phone to the police, they can hear everything she’s saying and I make this known to her. I suggest she goes upstairs and puts some clothes on as I have other residents in the lobby and what’s she’s doing was illegal and I give her another room key. I really don’t think this could have been the husbands fault either as he’s been in the lobby for 20 minutes by this point so unless she’s been wandering around the hotel in just her undies, I’m calling bull. The wife disappears upstairs, me and the police are done on the phone so we’ve hung up and those Irish kids from before that were in the lobby? Are now still there but pissing themselves laughing spitting pizza everywhere. The woman returns before the police (now wearing clothes) and starts trying to show me this red mark on her neck/chest that she’s claiming her partner did, even though her partner has been downstairs the entire time, since the last time we seen her chest and there was nothing there then. She starts trying to tell me how abusive and whatnot he is. I respond with, I’m not the police and I’m not interested in this conversation. Please go back up to your room and when the police get here, they’ll come up to speak to you themselves. The woman does not heed my advice and instead makes her way over to where her partner is now crying with his head in his hands and starts berating him in front of me and the Irish kids. I head over and stand in between them and she finally realised that she’s not going to get a bigger reaction from me or her partner and she finally goes up. Genuinely think this woman a manipulative bully looking back on this. Next thing I know, police get here and then a second car shows shortly after. Turns out the woman had went upstairs and rang the police herself. Anyway, I’ve now got two coppers talking to the guy in the lobby and two coppers upstairs speaking to bitch face and some giggling Irish kids in the corner of the lobby and I’m just stood there thinking about how many jobs I’ve got left to do before 7am and it’s now 5:00am. The police bring her down as we’ve established that the guy was the lead booker, so she’s now being escorted out of the hotel. This is when the woman turns around and asks me, and I’ll probably remember this convo for the rest of my life, “so? Did you like what you seen then?” And winked at me. Me and one of the policeman just turned and looked at each other. Did that kinda ‘what in the actual fuck just happened’ faces and they left and I went back in. The guy went back up to his room and she was taken away. To another hotel I think. Feel sorry for whoever theirs nights person was receiving that loon. Once I’m back in the lobby, It suddenly dawns on me that the two Irish kids are still in the lobby. They bring up the same conversation as earlier and they’re now saying they want to book another room. It’s at this point that I admit their friends are still here but they’re in a completely different room far away from theirs. They’re relieved that I told them and proceed to show me this video. Turns out they’ve stayed before (all four together). And the last time, they were filming themselves running up and down one of the corridors with no shirts on. Literally just bras and the one shirtless guy. One of the girls popped out of their bra however because they were sprinting. Due to the time stamp, I could actually get this up on our cameras too. Showed the am staff in the morning, had a laugh and put them on the DNR banned list. The hotel manager who was one of the ones on the am shift (opted not to show him the video of the Irish kids from last time, this was the assistant manager that I showed) I explained what had happened, showed him the night report and he was incredibly apologetic and completely sympathised as to why I hadn’t done anything other than set up the tables and breakfast bar so I still got out at 7. TL;DR two guests assaulted each other making an absolute mess of everything. Useless policemen. Domestic. Naked middle aged liars and a group of Irish kids that found everything absolutely hilarious after having a fight of their own elsewhere and bringing their own drama into the hotel. Thanks for reading. Edit: went through and fixed some sentences, gramma and spelling :)
2020.09.01 23:40 TinderBannedAlphaTinder Shadowbanned is REAL
I've been seeing a few shills post on here about shadowbanning not being a thing. I find it perplexing I've yet to be permanently banned while trying to bypass my shadowban. I literally do not know what kind of tech they use to track and match me with my previous account. I've used a different device, phone #, IP, and pictures with removed EXIF data. Maybe some of the burner numbers I've used have been compromised already and have a low ELO attached to them. Why a shadowban is real. 1.) check out 199flags self-improvement website has all the proof in the world to prove shadowbanning. 2.) From my personal experience joining Tinder in 2014 (glory days) to now, the experience is a total sh#t show. You can factor in the growing popularity, bot accounts, catfish, etc. but if anything that would make my account more popular than it use to be. Old Tinder i was over 100 likes every reset. Now i may create an account an have 2 likes in 24 hours or reset a few more times to hit the sweet spot and bypass everything for a 100+ account again. How about legit convos I'd be having with girls that completely go silent for no reason? Message them offline to find out they stop getting them once my account got connected to my old ones. Tinder censorship falls along the same lines of Facebook, Twitter, and google censorship happening in recent years. Feminazi's, simps, soyboys silicon valley, etc. are all being political on the internet.
2020.09.01 05:55 bagenutsWhat is the clear reason why sonic forces is mediocre?
https://preview.redd.it/vwtvkakslgk51.png?width=680&format=png&auto=webp&s=69d9cae2d8c9b2108f120d7d19f7967be71a5d45 Sonic forces is pretty crappy and mediocre we all know but what is the true reason for it. The reasons people say are plain misinfo or just pure speculation people pass off as factual. First starter they say the hedgehog engine 2 took 3 years which was never stated at all in all interview translated never once stated development was in a 3 year period or ended in 2016. According to the rough translation, they took the first year to develop new engines, which part of that would've been HE2. After that, they developed the team and start making ideas. The year before this interview was when production began. Even then modders found data and convos of the devs that imply it took a one yeaover a year period. I have no idea why that misinfo spread more than likely from sonictubers. Another lie is that sega completely overhauled the game from a oc only based game to a sonic and oc based game with classic sonic which is completely false. None of that is remotely said or implied in interviews and sonic is in all concept art as well. Why would a game originally intended for a 25th Janissary mark of the series not have sonic playable. The devs them selves have also said THEY wanted to put classic sonic in the game because people liked classic sonic alot in gens so it wasn't a Sega thing. Also that the gens and colors unleashed teams are gone and have left for Nintendo is also false. This keeps spreading around but if you compare all game teams most are literally still at sonic team. The only people that left were field artist asset makers and the dude who made the first hedgehog engine also 2 programmers not even close to all the original teams. My question now is why was it so mediocre the game is certainly lazy in alot of area and unpassionate but what is the reason for this outside of laziness . Some of colors level designs and even lost worlds 2d design are reused in this game. What is the reason for mediocrity. Im pretty sure it was just pure full on laziness because there are ALOT of parts of this game that are pure lazy.
2020.08.31 21:59 OdaNova[Progress] August completions.
Last month's report I got a few more abandoned games as I look to cut through the backlog further. I'll do the abandoned stuff first...
My Time At Portia
Yeah, yeah, before you jump on me for the score, this is actually IMO, a polarising game. From what I’ve seen you either absolutely love it, or it’s just meh. For me, it’s meh. It starts off nicely enough, new town, dad’s workshop, and you’re set loose crafting and building things either for plot purposes, or for money reasons. It’s simple and that’s mostly what the game focuses on, crafting and resources. Crafting and resource making takes time though, and although you can spend your time waiting for stuff to finishing getting made, you can just go off and mine or harvest resources whilst you wait. Then by the time you’re done, the crafts are done and you have a ton of new resources to put into new crafts. It’s simple, and therein lies the polarising nature of the game, I think. Either, you love the gameplay loop, or you don’t. That’s it. I do think there is one thing I feel needs dispelling; If you’re into Stardew Valley, then My Time at Portia is nothing alike. Stardew Valley is a farming game, with lots to do and a deeply crafted character focused world. My time at Portia is more or less all about the crafting, with paper-thin characters from what I saw of my time there, they’re nothing alike IMO. In any case, although I score it 3/10, I don’t actually think this is a game I can say ‘don’t play it, it’s shit’, it’s really a game where you need to try it and see if you get sucked into the gameplay loop or not, because lots of people do love it and I can sort of see why, but it just isn’t my thing.
Through the Darkest Of Times
Excellent concept, lead a resistance as Nazi Germany comes to power. The execution is dull and predictable as ever though, leading to a fairly tedious sort of game. One to avoid.
A turn-based RPG, which starts off interesting enough with a nice art-style and a rather curious introduction and world. The combat system is fairly simple, which isn’t too bad of an issue. What writes this game off however, is the dialogue and writing, which I think is pretty sub-par. Because the game is fairly basic overall, it fails to be compelling in spite of the bad dialogue, which makes it fairly easy for me to put down.
Action, whatever the hell it is.
Featuring some of the worst combat I’ve had the pleasure of dealing with on PC, plus possibly one of the dullest protagonists out there, Vampyr wastes what looks to be an interesting time period of London ravaged by the Spanish Flu pandemic. What convinced me to put it down quickly, wasn’t just the uninspired combat mechanics, but the fact that right out of the gate, early quests can send you into neighbouring areas of some twenty level differences. I’m all for waiting for progress to happen, but this is a bit of a steep and odd game design for me. If that’s how it is out of the gate, I don’t have much faith it’ll be a tight ride later on either, so I won’t waste my time. Also, the conversational system was fairly dull... I don't mind conversation heavy games, just spice it up quickly early on and leave the more snore-fest convos for later when I'm invested.
Turn based comedy? >_>
It's okay... Good humour, erm... It's great if you're into halloween I guess? For me, it just grew thin fairly quickly. If you get the vibe of the game then it's cool. The turned based combat system isn't particularly difficult, neither is dealing with the overworld sections, but it doesn't do enough to keep me invested. That's everything I gave up on this month... The stuff I did finish;
Little Big Workshop
Crafting Company management / Casual
Perhaps a harsh score, because Little Big Workshop is maddeningly addicting. It’s a simple concept, establish a factory supply chain, and earn a mint. It works here because it’s fairly casual, you just go where you want and do as you’d like. However, its casualness plays a part in its downfall. There aren’t enough data metrics to work out if you’re hiring too many or too few staff. It’s difficult to work out how to hit the bottlenecks, and sometimes staff seem to laze about doing fuck all as the timer ticks down. Also, the AI and pathing is pretty weak, with individual staff assigned to individual parts piecemeal, which can add to the time for production unintentionally. There are objectives here, but the game is a sandbox, so you set your own goals and go at your own pace. That’s a great thing, that’s what got me to dump far too many hours into it, addicting as it is. But as a game, I think it does miss the mark a little, it’s under baked, which is a shame because the potential here with a bit more time in the oven is probably a top-tier casual game IMO.
Yes, Your Grace
Narrative Kingdom Management
Yes, Your Grace, is a narrative point and click game where you’re the King of a small area called Davern. As King Eryk, you’re already established, with a wife and three daughters. Your daily routine is to listen to petitioners, and decide whether to spend gold, supplies or agents solving the local area’s problems. Some problems are pretty straightforward, some are so trivial you may not want to even waste your time on them. And some people, flat out lie to you in an attempt to con you of your resources. This resource management is balanced upon keeping people happy, keeping the kingdom going and feeding your army etc. For immediately out of the gate, you’re having to prepare for a barbarian invasion. This invasion kicks off a political show, where you need to start forming alliance with local lords in order to secure enough men to stand against the horde. Each minor lord has their own agenda or wants that you have to fulfil to secure their support etc. All of these mechanics are layered over an on-rails narrative experience, which tries to tell the story in a way that allows some player agency, but I think resources were far too limited to be as expansive as the developers might have wanted to be. You have a map mode you can send agents to, there’s a murder trial to solve, there’s a lot to do really, and whilst you can affect the endings and determine the fates of several important people, the core narrative beats will remain unchanged. You will always have the barbarian threat; you will always have the specific (spoiler-free) political ups and downs and so on. That isn’t a negative point, but don’t go into this expecting radical changes and whatnot stemming from a decision since, I think that’s a touch beyond the scope of the game. I enjoyed my time here; I blew through it in one large six hour sitting. Downsides? There are performance issues, lag and input issues but these are trivial and can be solved by a restart of the game. Other issues I can’t confirm; Apparently the German and Russian translations which were outsourced, got given out to some person who had a very basic grasp of the language, there are two big topics on the game forums from native speakers criticising the translation job – the devs are aware and I think their inexperience showed in getting suckered by shitty translators, but it’s a point to be aware of if you’re going to play this is anything except English. Definitely check this indie title out, it’s a breath of fresh air IMO.
Prey (The modern one :P)
FPS / Survival Horror
FPS games? Boring. Prey? Not so much. Prey works for me because, it is a mixture of survival (horror YMMV) and FPS elements. Nailed onto it, is a fairly good storyline. You star as the youngest of the Yu siblings (male or female), going through your job as super-intelligent science boffin, when shit hits the fan and everyone’s dying thanks to hostile aliens (this is super spoilery, but it’s basically on the store description of the game so…) The kicker is, these aliens are fairly strong and you’re usually restricted to batting them back with a wrench or a pistol. So, you need to improvise, use the environment, or just sneak beyond them. The beauty of the game is the free-form(ish) gameplay, you can after the initial tutorials, go ahead and explore quite a bit. Finding e-mails, recordings and dead or surviving crew members and helping or not helping them out. It’s all fairly interesting, and all of the elements come together to work well, the exploring, the story, the mystery of the invasion, the technology on hand, the ethical dilemmas and so on. How hard the game is can depend on your upgrade choices; There are neuromods, which basically make you super-human, but you can stick to being just 'super-human' or you can mix it in with alien powers to become even more powerful. It's a neat concept and both have their pros and cons. Everything just works, and then the ending is a nice cherry on top – some might say, it’s predictable, but I doubt anyone called the ending out right down to the T, but regardless, it has its own little twist to it that keeps it fresh and interesting. Definitely one to check out, definitely one I wish I hadn’t sat on for so long.
Skylar and Plux: Adventure on Clover Island
A tribute to games like Ratchet and Clank, Skylar and Plux puts you in command of a cat that has been modified to have a robotic arm. Meeting up with a bird called Plux, you set out to beat the big bad of Clover Island. It is simple, short and sweet, you can beat it in about three hours – so one hour for each stage of the game. It being short, ensures it doesn’t outstay its welcome, which is good because the game is fairly simplistic in nature. You jump around collecting shards and freeing captured friends etc, once in a while punching some robot foes. I liked it, and would have given it a 7, however, it is riddled with technical issues; Firstly frame-rate dips to 30-40fps even on a rig with a GTX 1080, for what is a fairly basic game graphically, I’d expect a smooth 60 dead on. Secondly, in two instances the game didn’t progress at the end of a cutscene, and I had to pause and skip to push things along. Both are pretty sore points in an otherwise enjoyable, short time waster. (The story is for kids, so expect the usual power of friendship clichés, but it’s all fun.) And that's it for me. 57 done for the year. Next month, I'll be happy if I can write off Pathfinder: Kingmaker (115 hours at the moment and I think it's only at the halfway point... =/), and then once I finish that, I'll probably have to retire or something. What an exhausting CRPG this is turning out to be. >_>
